The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said there has been an increase in thefts from unlocked cars in the Town of Wappinger area and is reminding residents to secure their belongings.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a written release that the suspect or suspects “involved in these crimes seem to target unlocked vehicles and seen to target an entire neighborhood in one night.”
The department said it has increased patrols within residential areas at night, when the incidents tend to occur, but residents are strongly encouraged to secure their cars, homes, garages, sheds and anything containing items of value.
“Often people are victims of crimes of opportunity and eliminating the opportunity will frequently eliminate the crime,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “During the holiday season, property crimes do often increase. Please be vigilant with your property and report any unusual or suspicious persons or vehicles.”
