Sheriff’s office investigates phone scam

July 8, 2009

  • Sheriff’s Office Detective Division is investigating a case of telephone fraud.

According to the sheriff’s office, people claiming to be authorities with the Hudson County Police in Ontario, Canada have called victims and stated that they have incarcerated one of the victim’s family members.

The suspects apparently researched the victims and provided actual names and addresses of their victims’ relatives, said Sgt. Jonathan Begor.

The caller then demands that a substantial sum of cash be sent via money order to a Canadian address for bail. The callers have reportedly impersonated the suspect’s family members. Once money is sent, no return calls are made and contact ceases, Begor said.

It was not clear who the alleged victims of the fraud are and the detective division could not be immediately reached for comment.

Anyone receiving similar calls is asked to collect as much personal information from the caller as possible, and then contact the sheriff’s office at 845-486-3800
